Each day during National Volunteer Week, we will share a story about one of our dedicated volunteers. We are so grateful for the commitment and passion of all volunteers in our great city. Thank you for everything you do!
Today we are profiling Travis Kruger, who is the Co-Lead for the GAIN IT Team.
Why do you volunteer with the GAIN IT Team?
My many years of professional experience can be of value to non-profit organizations that don’t have the financial capability to hire people with my level of skill.
How has the GAIN IT Team benefitted you?
I am learning a lot about the non-profit sector and what its needs are. I am proud that I am helping the non-profit sector improve while growing myself.
What is your favourite part about the GAIN IT Team?
I enjoy meeting new people and learning new things. The GAIN team as a whole has a tremendous amount of expertise and experience that I can tap into for my own personal development and networking.
Why did you get involved with United Way?
In this economy, with so many people struggling with less income and uncertain futures, the ability to help the United Way via volunteering is a great way to contribute to the community with more than just money.
What impact has volunteering had on you?
I am able to use my skills and expertise to help the community and that is a very powerful positive experience I can take forward in my career and life.
Can you describe a specific experience you’ve had that was particularly impactful?
Talking to various non-profits, I find that they experience the same issues that big businesses do. I’ve been able to bring my professional expertise to the non-profits to enable them to improve, while growing myself – a true win-win.
What advice would you give someone who is considering volunteering?
Find out what the community needs are, and, before volunteering, make sure you can commit to the skills and effort required to volunteer effectively. If the needs of the community and your time & skills align, it is a great way to help the community while improving yourself.
