For United Way’s 2014 “Do Good” campaign, we engaged 15 community-building Calgarians that believe in order for Calgary to be great city for all, we all play a role! All of the individuals involved have become Do Good Ambassadors on behalf of United Way of Calgary and Area and have joined us in our mission to be #united4yyc.
Lourdes Juan is one of our 15 Do Good Ambassadors. She is the Founder and Director of Soma Spa and LMJ Consultants, two small businesses in Calgary. She is also the Founder of Leftovers, a non-profit organization that picks up day-old baked goods from bakeries and cafes and delivers them to charities around the city. This holiday season, Lourdes wanted to give a gift that gives back to the community. Through her spa Soma, Lourdes will be coordinating her first-ever campaign for United Way. Our Media and Communications advisor Felicia Zuniga sat down with Lourdes to find out more.
Thanks for your generous support of the community! How can people take part? I am always happy to give back to the community! 10% of every $100 Soma Spa gift certificate sold between November 1st and December 31st will go to United Way. Our goal is to raise $5000 for United Way. Our campaign is asking Calgary to Spa for a Cause!
Why have you chosen to invest in your community through United Way? I am a firm believer in the power of an individual. I know that everyone can make a difference, and that there is a difference to be made. This campaign is about making an impact through people. A successful business, organization, or non-profit all need people power. I see the impact that United Way has for individuals and the community. If I can help through challenging and inspiring my teams, networks and community to make an impact, then the Calgary small business community can follow and keep the momentum going.
What does being a Do-Gooder mean to you? Being a do-gooder means making an impact, big or small. It means not only inspiring others, but also challenging others to be involved in the community. A do-gooder means leading by example through hard work, creativity and being involved. It excites me when people are compelled to work together. This campaign is just the beginning!
How can other Calgarians “Do Good” for their city? Get involved! Find an organization and cause that speaks to you and see what you can do to help out. Volunteers are always needed and taking the time to help is a way to make an impact.
Anything else you want to mention about local philanthropy? Calgary is home to many local philanthropists. Pushing for change at a local level is where we can all start to make a difference. Even small differences we make can add up and be game-changing.
UNITED WAY CHALLENGE: United Way is challenging all Calgarians to think about how they can do “one good thing” for Calgary before the end of 2014. Is there any way, big or small, that you could be better supporting those around you? Is there more you can do to be #united4yyc?
